Orders: Vertisolic - Subgroups

Both of the great groups have three subgroups associated with them: Gleysolic, Gleyed, and Orthic.

Gleysolic subgroup
Soils of this subgroup have prominent mottles or dull matrix colours (Bvg, Bssg or Cssg) indicative of water saturation and reducing conditions within 50 cm of the soils surface.

Gleyed subgroup
These are transitional soils between the Gleysolic and the Orthic subgroups. Soils of this subgroup have faint to distinct mottles (Bvgj, Bssgj or Cssgj) indicative of water saturation and reducing conditions within 50 cm of the soils surface.

Orthic subgroup
All other Vertisolic soils are classified into the Orthic subgroup.
